What Hair Is Made Of

Did you know that human hair is made up of an incredible protein called keratin, which consists of amino acids such as cysteine, glycine, proline, and tyrosine? That's not all: hair also contains trace minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc. But wait, there's more! The structure of hair is formed by three layers: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. The cuticle is like armor, the outermost layer, composed of overlapping scales that protect the inner layers and help prevent damage. The cortex, located beneath the cuticle, provides strength, elasticity, and color to the hair, and the medulla, found in the center of some hair strands, is a soft and spongy region. How amazing is that? And that's not all! Hair also contains pigment granules called melanin, which determine hair color. Plus, natural oils produced by the scalp called lipids, water, and other trace elements like sulfur and nitrogen all work together to keep your hair healthy and looking fabulous!
